  1. NetWare SQL
  2.  
  3. NetWare SQL is Novell's high-performance relational database
  4. engine designed specifically for the NetWare operating
  5. environment.
  6.  
  7. NetWare SQL takes full advantage of the NetWare operating system,
  8. adding the rigorous security and integrity features of SQL
  9. (Structured Query Language) to the proven reliability of NetWare.
  10.  
  11. NetWare and NetWare SQL provide the complete foundation for
  12. network database computing. When combined with a wide range of
  13. database applications such as spreadsheets, accounting packages,
  14. fourth-generation programming languages (4GL), and other database
  15. managers, you have a complete network or distributed database
  16. solution. Additionally, custom applications may be developed
  17. easily using XQL, Novell's developer's kit for NetWare SQL.

  19. Optimized network performance
  20.  
  21. With NetWare SQL, distributed application processing on a network
  22. is provided through client-server architecture. In this
  23. architecture, "client" applications have their database access
  24. and management performed by the "server" database engine. This
  25. eliminates the need for moving entire files from the server to
  26. the workstation for processing.

  28. Since NetWare SQL performs most of the data management processing
  29. at the server, only requested information is returned to the
  30. workstation, greatly enhancing concurrency and reducing network
  31. traffic. NetWare SQL can simultaneously process multiple requests
  32. from different applications.

  34. Centralized security and integrity
  35.  
  36. NetWare SQL manages data security and integrity centrally at the
  37. NetWare server rather than at multiple workstations around the
  38. LAN. Data management tasks such as record-locking and security
  39. control are thus enhanced  through NetWare SQL's centralized
  40. control. Also, data integrity and recovery are established
  41. through NetWare's Transaction Tracking System (TTS).

  43. Multiple server access with location transparency
  44.  
  45. NetWare SQL allows you to partition your data across multiple
  46. servers according to the requirements of your application. The
  47. physical location of the data is transparent to an application
  48. program, allowing it to perform relational "joins" across
  49. multiple NetWare SQL servers. For example, one server could be
  50. installed in Accounting and one in Sales, and yet someone from
  51. Marketing could generate reports using data from both.

  53. Improved use of workstation resources
  54.  
  55. Since all query processing is performed by NetWare SQL, the
  56. workstation is concerned only with the front end application and
  57. a NetWare SQL requester program. This frees memory space in the
  58. workstation and lets you run larger, more powerful client
  59. applications. NetWare SQL requester programs accept requests from
  60. front end applications and transmit these requests to the server
  61. for processing. NetWare SQL requesters are available for
  62. workstations in the DOS, OS/2, and Windows operating
  63. environments.

  65. Industry-standard, open application program interface
  66.  
  67. XQL is Novell's developer's kit for NetWare SQL (sold
  68. separately). XQL provides you access through three programming
  69. levels: ANSI/ISO standard SQL statements, stored SQL statements,
  70. Embedded SQL in the C programming language, and Novell SQL
  71. extensions. Language interfaces are provided for C, BASIC,
  72. Pascal, and COBOL.

  74. High-performance record management
  75.  
  76. NetWare SQL utilizes NetWare Btrieve, Novell's key-indexed record
  77. management system that supports high-performance file handling
  78. and improves programming productivity. This means that NetWare
  79. SQL applications can share files created and maintained by  the
  80. numerous Btrieve applications.

  82. Hardware/Memory Requirements
  83.  
  84. NetWare SQL runs in any NetWare server with at least 4MB (Value
  85. Added Process version) or 5MB (NetWare Loadable Module version)
  86. of RAM.

  88. The NetWare SQL Requesters are identical for the VAP and NLM
  89. versions of NetWare SQL. The DOS Requester uses approximately
  90. 70KB of RAM. Actual use depends on your selection of NetWare SQL
  91. parameters. DOS Requesters run with DOS v3.1 or above.

  93. The OS/2 Requester and the Windows Requester use approximately
  94. 90KB of RAM. Actual use depends on your selection of NetWare SQL
  95. parameters. OS/2 Requesters run with OS/2 Standard and Extended
  96. Editions 1.1. Windows Requesters run with Windows v3.0 and above.

  98. Software Requirements

  100. At the server, NetWare SQL requires Advanced or SFT NetWare,
  101. version 2.1 or above, and NetWare Btrieve, version 5.10 or above.
  102. NetWare SQL 386 requires NetWare v3.x or above, and NetWare
  103. Btrieve 386 v5.10 or above. Applications can be created to
  104. support DOS, OS/2 and Windows workstation environments.
